The Heart (as if you didn't know) is a muscular organ that pumps blood around your body.
The first successul heart transplant was carried out by Christiaan Barnard in 1967.
According to the Australia and New Zealand Organ Donation Registry:
There are around 70 heart transplants performed each year across Australia plus around 7 heart/lung transplants.
The one year survival rate is about 90%.
The heart valves may be used from hearts which can not be used for a full heart transplant, once appropriate consent is obtained from the family.
